I would like to share a verse with you that has been a part of my journey towards greater spiritual growth. In Matthew 3:8 it says:
“Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.”
I find this verse not only uplifting but challenging as well. In the past, when I would choose to sin, I found it easy to repent. The reason I found it easy was because I looked at my repentance process as a step towards feeling better about the sin I had just engaged in, whatever it may have been. In fact, my act of repentance was more about moving on than it was about turning away from all ungodliness. The more I matured in my spiritual walk, the more I began to embrace this verse.
We know that one aspect of repentance is embracing God’s grace and the freedom that it brings to our lives. Another aspect of repentance is turning away from all unrighteousness and filthiness and producing fruit (i.e. choices, actions) that is consistent with the new man that we are in Christ. May you and I always be reminded that we have a God who cleanses us from all unrighteousness. We have a God who lavishes His grace on us more than we could ever comprehend. We also have a God who empowers us to live a holy life in His power, through the Holy Spirit and by His Word.
